Netgear’s new, top-of-the-line Orbi mesh kit is available as a three-piece model. It adds 6 GHz bands and Wi-Fi 6E compatibility to a robust and expensive mesh networking system. The RBKE963 tested near the top of our charts, but once you add extra subscriptions like Netgear Armor ($100 per year) and Parental Controls ($70 per year), the RBKE963 is the most expensive networking kit here. And the Orbi has only a one-year warranty and 90 days of free tech support, so you’ll have to pay to extend warranty and tech support coverage (another $120 for two years). This might be fine if you have a sprawling mansion and seek one of the best performing mesh systems, but our upgrade pick and the Eero Pro 6 perform just as well for a lot less cash.

Mesh networks can also “self-heal” and self-regulate; in case one of your mesh satellites goes down or is particularly busy, the other mesh satellites can handle the excess as long as they are in range of your router and devices. Beyond that, there are very few settings you can change on in the Eero app to keep things simple, and the app is the only way to control the Eero mesh network. If these sound like gibberish to you, then you’re probably golden with the Eero 6 .

We tested the Eero mesh system all over a three-story house, where it outperformed kits costing two or three times as much. The best Wi-Fi mesh system: Eero 6
At any time, you can tap the top of the extension to pause or restart the audio track and run your finger over the extension's top to raise or lower the volume. My favorite is to just say something like "Hey Google, turn it up" or "volume level 4." Using Google's Broadcast function, the extensions can be used as an intercom that can also link with other Google Home gear and Nest Hubs for audio calls. There is a switch on each extension to turn the microphone off and preserve privacy. The Deco X20 was middle of the pack in price and performance, but it failed one of our 4K streams when the network was fully active. Rather than just looking at the mean of all the results during our five-minute test window, we look across the spectrum of results, from good to bad.
The ORbi system uses the larger RJ45 LAN jacks for ISP services and LAN connected devices. NETGEAR Armor shields devices other solutions miss; from phones and laptops to smart TVs and door locks, security cameras, and so much more. This will get you something in a speed class of AC1750 or AC1900 or a little above. Speed class is marketing nonsense, but those numbers indicate you’ll get a two-band, three-stream router, which is a good match for all the gadgets you most likely have. Any higher number and you’re paying for bandwidth you don’t need and your devices can’t use yet.

Overall, the router had a range of 80 feet and the mesh extension added another 50 feet. This should be fine for most homes, but it came up a little short in filling my house, leaving dead spots on the top floor and at the extremities. The Nest excelled on our mesh system test with a satellite unit 50-feet from the host router. While the Nest WiFi devices are rated to operate at a peak of 2.2Gbps, the new Eero devices top out at 550Mbps, one-quarter the peak abilities of the Nest.

We placed the second node in the converted attic, which is located on the third floor of the home. The Nest WiFi equipment relies primarily on the Google Home app for making configuration changes, although the customization options are few and far between. In addition to adding extensions and setting up groups, the app can adjust how bright the router and extensions glow. I then named the router's room and entered what I wanted to use as the network's name and password. At this point I agreed to have Google run networking tests, diagnose problems and create statistics.
Netgear’s Orbi RBK50 was our pick in the 2018 iteration of this mesh-networking guide. It’s been supplanted by the RBK752 and RBK852 in Netgear’s Orbi lineup, but the RBK50 is still available at a lower price. The RBK50 is one of the first successful mesh systems, but we think our current picks have surpassed it. The next chart shows what percentage of the time our test networks delivered a satisfactorily fast browsing experience. While many of the tested networks dragged 5% to 10% of the time , our top performers handled the vast majority of these tests in stride.
